
The tobacco growers of Lalmonirhat district are being cheated by purchasing agents of big cigarette companies, reveals The Daily Independent on June 16, 2014. The report says that the tobacco companies have put the growers in awkward situation by suddenly stopping purchase of tobacco forcing the market to go down.
The growers, having no other alternatives, are bound selling their produces at a lower rate. A syndicate of buyers of different cigarette companies is showing different excuses on freezing the trade. The report also says the companies are making extra profit by this unfair way. The farmers are not even getting their production cost. Although the farmers are protesting against this ill tactics by the industries but they are helpless to fight against them.

Besides, another report was published on 15 June in the daily online news portal www.banglapost24.com about the same tricks played by Dhaka Tobacco Company in Rangpur city. The report revealed that officials from the company allured the farmers to produce tobacco by providing them agent card. Right now the company is not buying their tobacco so the tobacco leaves are becoming rotten. The farmers protested but the officials avoided them by not coming to their office.
