The rural citizens of Lalmonirhat district have increased smoking since they get attractive gifts and offers provided by the tobacco companies which show ignorance on the amended tobacco control law, according to a report on The Daily Observer on April 24, 2014.

The report reads that both the local and foreign tobacco companies have started investing a huge sum of money by distributing and pasting leaflets containing the descriptions of the gift items in exchange of smoking some certain brands of cigarettes. The advertisements are found at most of the point of sales where the empty cigarette packets are deposited for receiving the gifts.

Following the amended tobacco control law, all forms of advertisements of tobacco and tobacco products is strictly prohibited, and the promotional activities in the district clearly violate the law. The local administration should be more careful about the issue and enforce the amended tobacco control law to stop such activities.
